Todd’s Story
Community Focused, Community Driven.
Todd Schierling is a seasoned fire service leader, labour representative, and public advocate with nearly three decades of frontline and executive experience. He currently serves as President of the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Association, representing fire fighters on key issues including occupational health and safety, labour relations, pensions, public policy, and legislative advocacy. He is also a Suppression Fire Captain with Surrey Fire Service, where he has served since 1996, bringing direct frontline experience in public safety and emergency response.
Todd is a lifelong North Delta resident who has raised his family in the community and spent more than 30 years serving his neighbours and this province as a firefighter, labour leader, team player, coach, and mentor. He grew up grounded in working-class values, community sports, and a strong commitment to public service.
His wife, Tammy, is also a lifelong Delta resident. Together, they raised their two daughters, Makenna and Caitlin, in the community. Both daughters are graduates of the University of Victoria and remain an important part of the family’s deep roots in Delta.
In addition to his role with the BCPFFA, Todd serves as an IAFF Field Service Representative, a Trustee on the BC Municipal Pension Plan Board, and a member of the BC Federation of Labour Executive Council. His leadership includes work with the BCPFFA Burn Fund and the BC First Responders Mental Health Committee. Through these roles, he has helped advance practical, evidence-based solutions on behalf of workers, families, and communities across British Columbia.
Todd has been heavily involved in provincial advocacy related to presumptive cancer coverage, early detection and health screening, mental health supports, and improved protections for workers facing occupational risk. Driven by his personal roots and extensive experience in both frontline emergency response and board-level governance, he brings a grounded, hands-on understanding of public service, worker representation, and community needs.
“My late father, who raised me in the 70’s / 80’s as a single parent in the Annieville neighbourhood, was a welder and hydraulic fabricator working in Tilbury’s Industrial Park. For 44 years, he put on his steel-toed boots and coveralls and went to work to provide for his family. He was a proud blue-collar worker who understood the value of hard work, perseverance, and looking after the people around him.
His story has stayed with me throughout my career and has shaped my commitment to working families, occupational health and safety, and ensuring that people who dedicate their lives to their work are treated with dignity and respect.
That experience is one reason I have spent so much of my career advocating for workers and first responders. I understand that behind every workplace statistic is a person, a family, and a community.”
